Session of the Month - January 2024

February 5, 2024

I don’t know about the rest of you, but January went by super quickly while simultaneously dragging on… not sure how that is possible, but here we are!

January is almost always a “slow” month, which isn’t necessarily a bad thing after the chaos of the fall and holiday sessions. It’s nice to finally feel like my life is somewhat under control again (at least as well as it can be with teaching, running a business, and being a wife & mom).

The session I selected for January is one that unexpectedly turned very whimsical. This mama reached out to me to do a smash cake session for her daughter’s first birthday but also wanted to include her older daughter as well just for a few photos. Let’s just say big sister missed the memo that you’re not supposed to steal the thunder at your little sister’s smash cake session.

Anytime someone books a smash cake session with me, I ask them if they have a specific theme/direction they would like it. This mama requested a butterfly/fairy theme to honor her own mom who passed away recently. She even bought adorable matching dresses for the girls that felt perfect for this theme.

Despite this session being booked as geared toward Melina turning one, Melina was NOT amused to be in a new space with a new crazy lady putting a camera in her space. There were, unfortunately, lots of tears. Amalia, however, was thrilled to hang out with me. She was all about the twirling, dancing, and overall looking pretty (which… seriously.. SO PRETTY!)

One of my new favorite photos came from this session. You’ll notice Amalia is wearing a butterfly necklace here. This beautiful necklace is actually a small urn with some of her grandma’s ashes inside. As she twirled around my studio, I got one shot of her looking up. I knew it was the perfect shot to turn into something even more special so I did a little “magic” to add her wings and a fairy. I just adore how it turned out!

Once we got Melina in front of her balloons and cake, she definitely perked up. I mean, who wouldn’t? These cakes are delicious!
